QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
To ask the Manager to update on efforts to progress the proposed school transport pilot project including details of any responses to funding applications made to the Department of Transport’s ‘Smarter Travel’ funding streams?
REPLY:
"Smarter Travel - A Sustainable Transport Future" A New Transport Policy for Ireland 2009 - 2020, provides under Action 14 (Chapter 5) that the Department of Transport will :
- Examine the potential for the expanded use of school and other publicly funded buses as a "local transport bus" to bring people to a range of services, with (in the case of school buses) the primary emphasis continuing to be on transporting children to and from school at the necessary times.
The Council has written to the Department in relation to its proposals and seeking funding for a pilot scheme but no allocation has been made to date. It is proposed to list this matter on the work programme for the incoming Transportation Strategic Policy Committee to examine how the Council's proposals in this regard could be delivered and what actions the Council can take to advance its Sustainable School Transportation Scheme for the County. The Members of the Council will be kept informed of progress through the regular reports of the SPC which are brought to the Council.
