MOTION NO.4

MOTION: Councillor S. Crowe

Cathaoirleach's Business.

That this Council Committee, conscious of the growing demand for memorials in suitable locations including cemeteries for deceased loved ones, calls on the Manager to investigate the  possible installation of suitable memorials including benches, tables, trees etc in a pilot scheme for a Park or Parkland in this Committee Area.

REPORT:

The Parks Department acknowledges the growing demand from families, relatives and other charitable groups for the erection of memorials at suitable locations in public parks throughout the County for deceased loved ones. The Council has to date adopted a very sensitive approach to this complex issue, trying to accomodate, where possible, the wishes of relatives whilst at the same time trying to control the proliferation of visually prominent memorials within our parks.

In this regard every effort is made with relatives or other groups to agree the provision, at a suitable location, of an appropriately discreet feature such as a tree, park bench etc.which relatives can visit on a regular basis.  It is the view of the Parks Department that the current arrangement is working satisfactorily and it is proposed to continue to deal with the issue in this way.
