QUESTION NO. 10
QUESTION: Councillor D. Keating
To ask the Manager to present a full report on the rolling out of the Brown Bin in South Dublin, including time scales on an area by area basis. Would the Manager also provide details of which associated facilities will be included with the Brown Bin, including for example the Kitchen Caddy as is already available in a neighbouring Local Authority?
REPLY:
The Brown Bin scheme has been under discussion with Unions for some time and while some operational issues have to be resolved plans are now being advanced for the introduction of the service as soon as is possible and subject to no unanticipated delays. It is envisaged that the service will be fully rolled out to all Customers within the first quarter of 2010. This is essential to allow the Council to be compliant with national targets for the diversion of bio-degradable waste from landfill by the deadline date of July 2010.
Councillors will be advised of the roll out arrangements and service details in the coming weeks.
In accordance with the Third Schedule of the Council's Storage, Presentation and Collection of Household Waste Bye-Laws 2007 the following items can be put in the brown bin:
- Kitchen food scraps/fruit & vegetables
- Meat, fish, poultry & bones
- Tea bags, coffee grinds & paper filters
- Breads, cakes & biscuits
- Soups & sauces, eggs & dairy products
- Out of date foods (cheese, yoghurt etc. – no plastic packaging)
- Paper napkins & paper towels
- Food soiled in light cardboard or paper (no coated paper)
- Grass clippings, leaves & plant trimmings (up to finger sized twigs)
- Cut flowers, old plants, moss & weeds – (no weed killer
The brown bin will accommodate waste that people would have placed in the Esker Green Facility. It will also reduce further black bin presentation as residual waste decreases further.
