MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor C. Brophy

That this Committee requests the Manager to outline the Development Plans for the Osprey Bridge and that he includes a timeline for any proposed improvement work.

REPORT:

The pedestrian bridge which links Osprey Drive across the Poddle River and through Tymon Park to Limekiln Road is an important link within the local community for access to public transport, schools, churches, shops etc. in the locality.  In May, 2009 the bridge was badly damaged by vandals and was temporarily closed for a short period to complete the necessary repair work.  The bridge is primarily of timber construction but in order to deter further vandalism, the damaged section of the bridge was replaced with a steel handrail.  The bridge has recently been inspected and is considered in a satisfactory condition for public use.  The Parks Department have no plans for any further improvement works to the bridge at the present time.  Consideration could be given in the future to the replacement of the timber bridge with an entirely steel structure in order to reduce its vulnerability to vandalism but this would be subject to the identification of the necessary funding to undertake the works.
