REPORT:
Excellent communication is a key component in the achievement by South Dublin County Council of its mission to deliver a quality service to its citizens and stakeholders. Our Communications Policy is informed by the strategic goals and objectives of the Council’s Corporate Plan- ‘Connecting with Communities 2004-2009’.
The aim of ‘South Dublin County Today’ is to explain how this Council and the many services/ initiatives it provides helps to improve the quality of life for all those who live, work and visit South Dublin County. The publication of documents such as South Dublin County Today are intended to lead to a better public understanding of what the Council does and what it wants to achieve in the future. These publications improve communication and access to information for all citizens of South Dublin County by encouraging the public to take up our services and experience the many facilities that the Council provides.
‘South Dublin County Today’ has been circulated bi-annually to all 80,000 households in the County. Each edition contains an image and the contact details of the current elected members for South Dublin County Council. Resignations/retirements of previous Councillors are recorded and updated with the contact details of their replacements. A draft copy of the magazine is circulated to all elected members in advance of production to ensure that their public contact details are up to date.
For the May 2009 edition of ‘South Dublin County Today’ the Council engaged the services of Paul Martin Communications Ltd, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 for the design and printing of the document and Publicity Mailing Ltd, Ballymount, Dublin 12 for the distribution of the magazine. The total design, production and distribution costs of the May 2009 edition amount to €32,082.86 including the Irish translation costs. A total of 82,000 copies were produced with 80,000 copies being distributed to households in South Dublin County in late May and early June 2009. The cost for each magazine including delivery was 40 cent per household.
The remaining 2000 copies were circulated to Council buildings including County Hall, Civic Offices Clondalkin, Leisure Centres, Community Centres and through the Public Library Network.
South Dublin Today is a bi-annual publication which has been in existence since 2002. It is important that the Council communicates its role, policies and activities in a way that promotes a positive image of the county. In promoting Council projects, initiatives and news through this resident’s brochure, the Council is aiming to achieve a better and more informed public understanding of what we do and what we want achieve in the future. These publications improve communication and access to information for all the residents in South Dublin County and through Customer Feedback sessions and forms residents have consistently indicated that regular written information brochures are one of the preferred methods of receiving information from the Council.
