HEADED ITEM NO. 10
Allotments
REPORT:
Provisions of Allotments in South Dublin County
Background
The Council opened four new allotment facilities within the County in January 2006. Due to the demand for plots, the Council extended the Friarstown facility in 2008 to include a further 80 plots.
The breakdown of plots are as follows:
Facility Location | Total No. of Plots | Size |
Corkagh Park, Clondalkin | 27 | 100 Sq Mtrs |
Mill Lane, Palmerstown | 73 | 120 Sq Mtrs |
Friarstown , Bohernabreena | 20 | 100 Sq Mtrs |
Friarstown, Bohernabreena | 100 | 120 Sq Mtrs |
Friarstown, Bohernabreena | 12 | 250 Sq Mtrs |
Tymon Park, Tallaght | 13 | 100 Sq Mtrs |
The plots are allocated in accordance with the Allotment Scheme which was adopted by the Elected Members in September 2005. Allocation of plots in all sites is in accordance with placing on a waiting list.
The allotments have been improved by the provision of a water supply and parking areas. Some allotments have on-site storage, composting and toilet facilities, provided for the convenience of plot holders.
The allotment scheme is only open to people who reside within the South Dublin County Council area.
At present there is a waiting list of over 380 for all four sites which highlights the demand for this type of recreational facility.
To endeavour to meet the demand for allotments, it has been agreed to create an additional c.100 plots at Friarstown, and a number of other sites are being examined throughout the county.
To continue servicing of existing sites and the development of additional plots it is necessary to review the allotment scheme including the fee arrangement and other issues.
