QUESTION: Councillor S. Crowe
To ask the Manager in view of the widespread demand for allotments in the County can he give a report outlining the initial cost and maintenance, the rental returns, the waiting list per allotment and his future plans if any to meet this growing demand from residents?
Reply:
South Dublin County Council provides 245 allotments , which are allocated throughout the County.

There is an overall waiting list of approximately 380 at present for allotments.
The Council has examined the potential to extend the current Allotment Scheme throughout the County, and it has been agreed to extend the allotment facility at Friarstown, Bohernahreena. This extension of Friarstown is currently being examined and it is expected works will proceed in the near future. It is anticipated that an extra 105 alltoments will be provided at this location at an estimated cost of €47,000.
The rental income from the letting of the allotments amounts to €10,788.50 in the current year.
Notwithstanding the above, the Parks & Landscape Services Department is examining areas within parks and Council owned lands where new allotments might be appropriate throughout the County.
In conjunction with this examination a full review of all aspects of the Council's Allotment Scheme including development costs, maintenance and management costs and the letting fee structure is also being undertaken with a view to facilitating the rollout of additional sites
