MOTION NO. 3
MOTION: Councillor S. Crowe
Cathaoirleachs Business
This Council Committee calls on the Manager to give a report outlining the possible effect of the withdrawal of Jobs Initiative workers on Community Projects in the Tallaght Committee Area and can he outline if any assessment has been carried by his Department regarding this proposal.
REPORT:
Job Initiative is a programme providing full-time employment for persons who are 35 years of age or over, who have been unemployed for 5 years or more and have been in receipt of social welfare assistance over that time. The primary purpose of the programme is to assist long-term unemployed people to prepare for work opportunities in the open labour market. It achieves this by providing participants with vital work experience, training and development opportunities. South Dublin County Council has been sponsoring a Job Initiative scheme at Community Centres since the mid-nineties. In this way, the Council has been assisting local voluntary management committees in the caretaking, maintenance and management of the Community Centres. This has led to a greater and more efficient use of the Centres.
