COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (1)
Monday, September 21, 2009
MOTION NO. 8
MOTION: Councillor M. Corr
That the Manager outlines the savings to the Council in the Tallaght area through the removal of weekend bin collections when bank holidays occur.
REPORT:
The total costs of providing bin collections on or in lieu of the ten bank/public holidays was approximately €300,000 per year mainly comprising staff overtime costs but also costs associated with the hire of the freighters, fuel, etc.
Given that five bank/public holidays are on Mondays while others generally occur on varying days, a definitive saving in respective of Tallaght cannot be provided but it is etimated that approximately 40% of this cost could be attributed to the Tallaght area. This saving will bring the Council closer to the required full-cost recovery position required by the end of 2010 while at the same time responding to the very real situation where the presentation rates are dropping so considerably that over the three replacement collections last Christmas 3,725 bins were collected out of approximately a possible 45,000 and bearing in mind that this would have traditionally been seen as a time of high presentation.
