MOTION NO. 8

MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart

"That the Manager liaise with M50 Concessions regarding the planting of the central median of the M50."

REPORT:

The widening of the M50 mainline to three lanes has been generally carried out within the existing central grassed median.  The advantage of this method of construction is that no additional landtake is required outside of the existing boundary, except at the interchanges.

The concrete median barrier is required along the length of the scheme to reduce the risk and consequences of an errant vehicle crossing the median and to protect structures from impact. It has a high containment standard with a limited working width to suit the narrow median width that will remain following the road widening.  The concrete barrier  is a single width unit, widening in certain areas to facilitate bridge piers and gantry foundations.

Due to Health and Safety Requirements in relation to grass cutting on National routes it is not intended to plant the widened areas of the central median barrier.
