MOTION: Councillor D. Corrigan

Chapter 1 - Strategy

That this Council ensures that existing agricultural land banks are protected with a view to improving and enhancing local food production for reasons of food security, with specific policy objectives adopted to achieve this goal.

REPORT:

The Draft Development Plan will include policies in relation to the promotion of allotments. The Development Plan also zones significant portions of the County objective B with a stated zoning objective ' To protect and improve rural amenity and to provide for the development of agriculture.' With respect to the issues of  food security and locally produced foods these relate more to national agricultural policy. It is considered that the linkage of future zoning to the protection of locally based food growing areas is not appropriate.
