MOTION: Councillor C. Keane

That this Council discusses the setting up of a 999 text messaging service to enable deaf people to contact the emergency services from their mobile phones. This is available in Northern Ireland and has been launched in West Yorkshire in conjunction with Leeds City Council where Police Officers have worked in partnership with the Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind people and Leeds City Council to develop the service.

REPORT:

South Dublin County Council will liaise with societies for the hearing impaired and public emergency service providers to explore the possibilities of introducing emergency texting system.  The council will keep the members updated on progress in this regard.
