QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

To ask the Manager for an updated report on this Council's proposed Pilot School Transport Project and if there have been any further responses from the Department of Transport?

REPLY:

The Minister for Transport , Noel Dempsey T.D. published "Smarter Travel - A Sustainable Transport Future" A New Transport Policy for Ireland 2009 - 2020 several weeks ago. The policy provides under Action 14 (Chapter 5) that the Department of Transport will :

• Examine the potential for the expanded use of school and other publicly funded buses as a "local transport bus" to bring people to a range of services, with (in the case of school buses) the primary emphasis continuing to be on transporting children to and from school at the necessary times.

It is proposed to explore with the Department how this policy can be delivered and what actions the Council can take to advance its Sustainable School Transportation Scheme for the County. The Council will be kept informed of progress over the coming months.
