MOTION NO. 9

MOTION: Councillor C. Brophy

"That the Manager outline how Parks are cleaned of dumped items. In particular how some items which are not removed on a first clean seem to remain for many years with no effort to remove them."

REPORT:

The Parks & Landscape Services Department undertake regular litter-picks and clean-ups of parks and open spaces as part of their ongoing maintenance.  Particular locations which are identified as blackspots for littering and illegal dumping are targeted for major clean-up operations on a periodic basis or as needed.  Staff of the Parks Department actively co-operate with the Litter Wardens in identifying perpetrators of illegal dumping and their subsequent prosecution.  On occasion, in the course of a routine litter-pick, heavier items of dumped material are located which may require the assistance of a machine to remove them and the timing of this may not always coincide with the availability of a machine or suitable ground conditions.  However, the offending material is usually removed as soon as possible afterwards.  If there are specific locations which require attention, they should be brought to the attention of the Parks Department and prompt action will be taken.
