HEADED ITEM NO. 4
2009 Year of Creativity & Innovation
2009 is the Year of Creativity and Innovation, and the Council proposes through it’s Sports Officer and the Sports Partnership to make a contribution through devising and implementing new strategies, events and combinations of sports and activities.
This is likely to include a particular concentration on identifying and arranging a range of activities particularly targeting those who are least likely to have an opportunity to get involved in sport or physical activity. Those specifically targeted would be older people, teenage girls, people with disabilities, and people from socio-economically deprived areas.
The Council plans to take a fresh look at how all its community centres and sports facilities are utilised. Although many of the facilities are fully booked for evenings, they are sometimes left unused during the day, and there are several ways in which we may be able to exploit this time to the benefit of some of our target groups.
In the present economic climate, where so many people have lost their jobs and have time on their hands, it may be appropriate to develop some form of volunteer programme that will allow these people to share their skills and experiences for the benefit of their own community, while also perhaps picking up new skills themselves and feeling that they are making positive use of their time and energy.
Ideas such as these will be developed and hopefully used to enhance the lives and of the people of South Dublin during the year of Creativity and Innovation.
