MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

HEADED ITEM NO. 11
HEADED ITEM: Councillor M. Corr
MAYOR'S BUSINESS
That this Council, subject to Council approval of the Fortunestown Lane/Garter Lane Local Area Plan, and recognising the statement in the Plan that “it is considered prudent to reserve a 3 acre site on the plan lands for a school to meet the existing and future needs of the local community” and that “no more than 50% of the lands shall be developed before a school is constructed on site”, supports the submission received from St Marys NS in respect of the school site, (Ref FGD/007), and requests that the submission together with this statement of support be referred to the Department of Education and Science.
REPLY:
The Managers report in respect of the Fortunestown Lane/Garter Lane Local Area Plan is listed for consideration on the agenda for todays Council meeting. The submission received from St Marys NS, Saggart reads :
· The site set aside for the school in the LAP should be named as the site for the new building for St. Mary’s N.S.
· The existing St. Mary’s N.S. is operating from two sites, which is not a viable option.
· The agreement for the site to the rear of the Catholic Church for a temporary school is for one year.
· Development in Saggart has lead to increasing congestion and the school is concerned about overlooking of the school yard.
· The relocation of St. Mary’s N.S. to the LAP site would ensure a connection between the LAP lands and Saggart Village.
· Neither the main school building or the temporary school on the church grounds are appropriate and the school has been Band 1.1 in the Department of Education for a new school for four years.
If the Motion is passed the terms of the submission and the Motion will be referred to the Department of Education & Science.
