MOTION NO. 6
MOTION: Councillor E. Maloney
That the elected members commend the workers in the street cleaning section, the clean-up crew, litter- wardens and management for their efforts in having Tallaght , again, designated Litter-Free. Will the Manager outline what steps will be taken to discourage the minority who continue to litter our neighbourhood.
REPORT:
The positive comments in the motion are noted and welcomed.
The recent results of the IBAL Anti-Litter Survey, together with the results of the baseline litter survey of the County conducted by An Taisce on behalf of the Environmental Services Department, show the positive impact of the range of measures undertaken within the Department including:
- Litter Management Plan 2008-2011;
- Restructured Cleansing team involving targetted early morning clean ups of Tallaght and other town centres in the County;
- Contact with businesses and property management agencies in the the town centre to ensure clarity around responsibilties under the Litter Pollution Act;
- Pilot partnership in Tallaght with the Probation Services in tackling graffiti;
- Environmental awareness iniatives such as the anti-cigarette litter and anti-gum litter campaigns, school and community information sessions etc.
- Co-ordination of Parks Department and Cleansing Section works to ensure greater work synergy;
- Use of CCTV to identify litter and dumping offenders at various locations throughout the County.
- Enhanced enforcement of waste bye-laws;
- Trial of a solar compacting bin in Belgard Square;
- Launch of accessible to all bring banks in Sean Walsh Park;
These initiatives combined with community participation and civic responsibility should ensure that Tallaght's (and indeed the County's) image continues to improve as we work to maintain a litter free County. They will be combined with a continuing emphasis on rigourous enforcement of the Litter Pollution Act and the pursuit of new and innovative measures to tackle litter offenders.
