MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor S. Crowe

This Council Committee concerned at the lack of free flow in traffic at the Square Tallaght (Super Value/Latina Restaurant  end) and recognising the difficulties being experienced by Dublin Bus drivers keeping trying to keep Bus Schedules, calls on the Manager to review

 A) the traffic lighting sequences,

B) Broadening the  bus stop lay byes ( with a view to making more room to pull in and allow traffic to overtake)

 C) any  other constructive or practical measures in conjunction with Bus Ath Cliath Managment and local business premises with a view  to improving  the situation for commuters and motorists in the area.

REPORT:

The junction of the Old Blessington Road and Belgard Square West suffers from congestion at certain times of the day. This negatively impacts on approaching traffic, particularly coming from the Square car park and Belgard Square South. The following should be noted:

• The primary cause of congestion is the queuing of traffic on Cookstown Way from the N81. This prevents throughput of traffic at this junction especially in the evening.
• The signal timings also take account of approaching tram movements and occasionally motorists have to wait for trams to pass.
• Dublin Bus is satisfied with the time to approach the signals and is continually monitoring their service in the area.
• Additional detectors are proposed for the junction following adjacent construction.

Given the nature of the junction environs and use it should be expected that it will be busy as pedestrians, cyclists, trams, buses and cars all converge.
