QUESTION NO. 1

QUESTION: Councillor C. Brophy

"To ask the Manager to list the laneways that will be cleaned in the ward in the next six months and to outline the councils policy in relation to the cleaning of laneways?"

REPLY:

The cleansing section have responded to a very large number of requests to clean laneways in all parts of the County in recent weeks.  These mostly related to laneways affected by leaf falls, and this clean up work is now up to date.  Requests for laneway clean ups are in general referred to the litter warden in the first instance for inspection.  If on inspection the warden finds a need for the laneway in question to be cleaned then the clean up will be arranged by the warden with the cleansing section.  The policy currently in place is to clean laneways as required and in accordance with the recommendations of the litter wardens.  The wardens are also responsible for enforcing the Litter Pollution Act 1997, and in accordance with this Act the owner of any property which bounds the laneway has a responsibility to maintain it in a clean state.  The Road Maintenance Dept also has a responsibility in relation to maintenance of laneways and in particular that department is responsible for maintenance of the laneway surface which also includes the removal of weeds from that surface.
