MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (1)

Monday, November 17, 2008

QUESTION NO 10.

QUESTION: Councillor K. Warren

“To ask the manager if he is aware of the immediate financial difficulty that is faced by the Balrothery Sports and Leisure Centre at Tallaght Community School, to set out what discussions he has had to date with all parties concerning the financial difficulties and the future viability of the swimming pool at the leisure centre and if he will make a statement  on the matter?”

REPLY:

The Council has been informed of the financial difficulties faced by the Balrothery Sports and Leisure Centre and requested a joint meeting with the Department of Education and Science, owners of the facility, and the School which has been arranged for Tuesday 11th November 2008.

The Council pays a subsidy towards the facility each year based on the agreement of “deficit funding” between the Department and the Council.

This sum is however paid directly towards the operation of the facility early each year and has risen substantially from €40,000 to € 60,000 in recent years.

We await a response from the Department of Education and Science on the matter.
