MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, November 10, 2008

MOTION NO.2

MOTION: Councillor C. Keane

That this Council discusses the mapping of the SDCC (a) Roads mapping – new alignments; new road layouts; new speed limits; new lanes etc. in order to assist GPS mobile communications updating. There is currently over an 18-month delay on this information as there is no centralized facility in Ireland on changing infrastructure – and that this recommendation be forwarded to each council.

REPORT:

Roads mapping for information and location purposes is generally the responsibility of the Ordnance Survey Office. This office produces a series of maps based on aerial survey to various scales which are updated on a regular basis and new editions of these are produced regularly.

The Council does not produce any commercial mapping of this nature. However, the Council responds to requests from commercial mapping organisations for updated mapping.

The Council is obliged to keep an updated register of the road network which carries a description of the road network in charge of the Council containing information relating to classification and type. In addition the council maintains a register of Road Speed Limits which is reviewed regularly by the members as a reserved function.

If the motion is passed the sentiments of the motion will be conveyed to other Local Authorities.
