QUESTION NO. 10
QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy
To ask the Manger if he will have regard to complaints from a number of areas about the adavnce information provided on measures recently taken to enforce some aspects of the bye-laws relating to the presentation of household waste, and if he will report on publicity measures planned to inform householders when any additional monitoring is to be implemented, particularly in regard to the allowed materials to be placed in the different types of bins?
REPLY:
The South Dublin County Council Storage, Presentation and Collection of Household Waste Bye-Laws 2007 were adopted by this Council in November 2007. Following this and up to August 2008, Litter Wardens have been carrying out a Countywide "on-the-ground" awareness campaign, notifying householders where breaches of the Bye-Laws have occurred. In addition, a notice advising of the introduction of the bye-laws was prominently displayed on the website. Experience has shown, not just in South Dublin, that eliminating over-packed and open bins as well as additional materials left alongside bins significantly reduces litter and this is particuarly so as we enter into the winter months.
Since a more rigid enforcement of the bye-laws commenced in late August to heighten awareness, there have been various queries from both Members and the public about the bye-laws. In acknowledgement of this, there will be a concerted campaign on our website and using local media other avenues to ensure that the general public's awareness is increased.
