QUESTION NO. 23

QUESTION: Councillor C. Brophy

"To ask the Manager to provide a bin at the entrances and exits from all secondary schools throughout the ward as a means of tackling the growing litter problems caused by school students using local shops at lunch hour?"

REPLY:

The provision of additional litter bins is assessed on a case by case basis having regard to the extent of the litter issues at particular locations, proximity of other litter bins in the area and the capcacity of crews collecting bins on the route.  It should be noted that that litter prevention is another aspect that is pursued by the Environmental Awareness office through information sessions and talks in schools. This is often an option that delivers a more significant impact in terms of changing behaviour and promoting awareness.

Members that have particular locations in mind should propose same so that they can be assessed in the light of the foregoing considerations.
