Report of the Organisation, Procedure & Finance Committee Meeting – 18th September 2008
At the Organisation, Procedure and Finance Committee Meeting held on 18th September 2008 the following motion and report were considered:
It was proposed by Councillor J. Daly, seconded by Councillor J. Neville:
“That this Council grants the freedom of the County to Olympian Ken Egan in view of the honour Ken has brought to the County in the recent Olympics.”
Report:
Section 74 of the Local Government Act 2001 provides that a Local Authority may confer civic honours on distinguished persons including admission to the honorary freedom of its administrative area and the Organisation Procedure & Finance Committee at its meeting on 20th. March 2008 agreed a protocol to honour distinguished persons for significant achievement.
It is acknowledged that the achievement of Neilstown boxer Ken Egan in winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing has brought great honour to Ken, his Family, Neilstown Boxing Club, South Dublin County and indeed Ireland and it now before the members of South Dublin County Council to determine if Civic Honours including Freedom of the County should be conferrd on Ken.
The following resolution would be required:
"That Civic Honours including Freedom of the County of South Dublin County be conferred on Ken Egan, Irish international boxer, to acknowledge his achievement in winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing"
Should the members pass this resolution arrangements will be made in conjuction with Ken to honour on him as soon as possible. End of Report
Following a vote by show of hands it was RESOLVED:
"That Civic Honours including Freedom of the County of South Dublin County be conferred on Ken Egan, Irish international boxer, to acknowledge his achievement in winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing"
