QUESTION NO. 19
QUESTION: Councillor C. Keane
"To ask the Manager to provide a detailed report on the recent/ongoing works on the weir at Tymon Park – the Poddle etc. i.e. by SDCC and OPW?"
REPLY:
As part of the Whitehall Road Flood Alleviation Study prepared in August 2004, it was recommended that the old weir in Tymon Park be reconfigured as little or no detention of water, during heavy rainfall, was being achieved at the ponds due to the old weir opening being wider than the actual river channel. This old weir had a discharge of approximately 12.5m3/second. Recently the Council’s Drainage Maintenance Section crew removed the old weir and rebuilt it, modifying the orifice opening which will restrict the maximum flow from the ponds to 5m3/second during storm conditions. The retention of water in Tymon Park ponds and the restriction of flows downstream of the weir will lessen the likelihood of flooding from the Poddle River in the Kimmage area.
The recent upgrade works to the weir at Tymon Park was completed on week ending 26th July last. The finished structure conforms to the design brief drawn up by the Drainage Design Section. However, the Parks Department plans to face the structure with decorative stone and this work has been logged in the work programme. On completion of this work the Drainage Section will remove the temporary river diversion and reinstate the area.
