COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (1)
Monday, May 19, 2008
MOTION NO 12.
MOTION: Councillor C. King
"That this Committee calls on the Manager to establish a working group/Committee headed by the Councils Community Department with responsibility for ensuring a St Patricks Day Parade in Tallaght takes place for 2009 and onwards as the current hit and miss arrangement is completely unacceptable to the people of Tallaght taking into consideration our strides towards becoming a city and the fact that the smallest of towns around the Country can organise Parades".
REPORT:
South Dublin County Council Community Department will be pleased to assist any group , association or organisation that wishes to become involved in either organising or exploring the possibility of setting up a committee / working group designed to re-establish a Tallaght St. Patrick’s day parade.
It is considered essential that the local community (both voluntary and commercial sectors ) take a leading role in this regard, with the Council providing assistance , guidance and resources as appropriate.
In the past there has been a failure to successfully establish the appropriate community based groundwork and support that results in a well supported parade and despite the best efforts of the Council the resulting parades were not a success and were thus not continued.
The Council’s current involvement with and support for many community , arts , sports and other organisations mean that it is in an ideal position to engage with requests for assistance in any proposed venture to re-establish a parade.
