MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, May 12, 2008

QUESTION NO. 1

QUESTION: Councillor M. Ardagh

To ask the Manager to contact Eircom, NTL and other telcos and ask them to remove graffiti from their boxes in the County?

REPLY:

The Council's Environmental Services Dept has recently contacted each of the Utilities with a view to meeting with them and devising strategies to deal with this problem.

In general, where the Environmental Services Department is aware of specific instances of graffiti located on public utilities the organisation responsible is contacted and requested to remove the graffiti as soon as is practical.  If the reasonable timeframes for removal are not complied with, notices are served under the Litter Pollution Act, 1997 as amended, to enforce compliance with their responsibilities.  A case by case approach to instances of graffiti is used and it is not considered appropriate to contact companies in a general manner as suggested.  Instead, where specific problem locations are identified, they should be notified to the Environmental Services Department for local follow-up with organisations as approriate.
