QUESTION NO. 16

QUESTION: Councillor K. Warren

To ask the Manager if the Roads Department has given consideration to allow taxis use the existing “bus plug” which is adjacent to The Square i.e. Belgard Square South, if he would not agree that this would makes sense, and if he would not agree to open up access to this route for taxis as a means of improving traffic flows in the area, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

REPLY:

It is not possible to permit Taxis to use the Bus Plug crossing Cookstown Way for both technical and legal reasons.

This section of road is defined by a ‘no entry except busses’ sign and as such only busses (or certain maintenance vehicles) are permitted to use the road. A sign to include taxis is not prescribed and, therfore, cannot be used.

It should also be noted that if the road and signals were to be modified to cater for busses and taxis the volume of traffic would increase and cause direct delays on Cookstown Way as the ‘green time’ for other traffic would be reduced.

It is only possible to provide this bus only road, in it's current location, due to the legal protection provided by the associated signage.
