QUESTION NO. 2
QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart
"To ask the Manager to present a report on the public response to the move to fortnightly green bin collections?"
REPLY:
The response to fortnightly collection of green bins has been very positive and can best be seen when the statistics regarding collected tonnages are examined. In 2007 a total of 15,285 tonnes of waste was recycled, compared to a total of 13,817 tonnes in 2006. This represents an increase of 10.6%. In January 2008 a total of 1,681 tonnes has been recycled, compared with 1,290 tonnes in January 2007. This represents an increase of 30%. It is expected that the tonnage of materials recycled in 2008 will exceed 20,000 tonnes, and this would represent an increase of around 32% in the recycled tonnage.
