MEETING OF TERENURE-RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE 1

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

HEADED ITEM NO.8

REPORT ON DRAFT SPEED LIMIT REVIEW 2008

As a consequence of submissions made following the introduction of the Road Traffic Speed Limit Bye Laws 2006 – (R.S.L. No. 1 of 2006), it was agreed that the Council would undertake a further review of the speed limits within a 2 year period.

A draft review has now been completed for presentation to the Area Committees.  Following on from recommendation of the proposed review by the Area Committees, a formal submission has to be made to the Garda Commissioner (who has one month to respond) and thereafter, a full public consultation process will commence.  Comments and observations will also be sought from the National Roads Authority.  The attached schedule and associated map show the proposed changes.

 The main changes proposed are:

 1.                 Rural Non-National Roads

All Rural Non-National Roads to have special speed limit of 60km/h reduced from the existing speed limit of 80km/h.

 2.                 M50

M50 to have a special speed limit of 100km/h from Fingal County Council boundary to Dun Laoighre Rathdown County Council boundary.  Reduced speed limit to take effect once upgrading works are complete (and Toll Booth removed).

 3.                 M50 Freeflow Interchanges

M50 Freeflow interchanges to have special speed limits appropriate to their design.

 4.                 Periodic Special Speed Limit

A periodic special speed limit of 30km/h at Whitechurch National School.
