QUESTION NO. 6

QUESTION: Councillor M. Corr

To ask the Manager to provide this Committee with a detailed visual demonstration of the anticipated revised road layout at all existing junctions on the Cheeverstown Road - indicating the locations of traffic lights including pedestrian light provision with particular emphasis on pedestrian traffic crossing to and from Fettercairn to Brookfield Road and to and from Cheeverstown Road to Fortunestown Lane at the location of Tallaght Leisure Centre?

REPLY:

All junctions on the scheme have been designed as signal controlled junctions.  The provision of new traffic signal controlled junctions at Fortunestown Junction,, Cookstown Junction, Fettercairn Junction and Brookfield junction and the junction of the Outer Ring Road with the Tallaght ByPass (N81) are intended to provide improved traffic managemment, improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists and bus priority through the junctions. The existing Tallaght By Pass (N81) Killinarden Road Junction will also be upgraded as part of the proposed road development.

For the signal controlled junctions, there are typically two lanes going straight through the junction (one bus lane and one general vehicle lane) along the main road with a dedicated right turn lane for movements onto the the minor road.

Push button activated Toucan crossings (combined pedestrian and cyclist) are proposed at each junction along the scheme, providing crossing facilities for all movements across the junctions.  Where possible Toucan crossing phases will run in parallel with appropriate traffic stages.  The crossings all include the use of traffic islands to provide a safe refuge for pedestrian and cyclist movements.

The Environmental Impact statement published in 2005 and approved by An Bord Pleanála contains the scheme layout figures: 4.2-4.9 which show the junction arrangements along the entire roadway.
