MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE 1

Monday, February 18, 2008

QUESTION NO 15.

QUESTION: Councillor J. Neville

To ask the Manager for a detailed update on efforts by this Local Authority to ensure ringfenced funding for the refurbishment/replacement of the existing Balrothery Sports Complex and will the Manager outline from, which Government Department this funding will be sourced and will the Manager outline, what contact was made with the Department of Education & Science & the Department of Arts, Sports & Tourism?

REPLY:

Meetings have been held between the Community Services Department and the Department of Education and Science, who are the owners of the complex, on the matter of the Tallaght Community Swimming Pool complex at Balrothery as agreed on a number of occasions. Whilst these meetings are inconclusive there is a commitment from the Department of Education to assist with the Council in pursuing finance for the refurbishment of the complex.

It is confirmed that an application for funding has been received from Tallaght Community School for a PE Hall which includes a swimming pool. This application will be considered for funding from the €4.5 billion which is being provided for school buildings under the National Development Plan.

The Council has also advised the Department of Education and Science that when the national Swimming Pool programme re-opens the Council would support such an application from the Department for Tallaght Community School.

The Council has already provided the Centre management with the funding as provided in the 2008 Budgets for running of the pool.
