MEETING OF TERENURE-RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE 2

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

QUESTION NO. 11

QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart

"To ask the Manager to outline the position with regard to private refuse collectors in Terenure-Rathfarnham?"

REPLY:

Approximately 130 households in the administrative area of this Area Committee have switched to private refuse collection companies to date.  This figure is considered relatively minor in the context of aggressive marketing campaigns and introductory offers being operated by these companies.

It is also noteworthy that a number of households that had switched to private companies have now switched back once the initial "free period" benefit offered had expired.

The Council continues to offer an excellent service in the county and appreciates the loyalty demonstrated by our customers. This continued loyalty is acknowledged by the fact that we have not increased our prices; by the continued provision and roll out of recycling centres and facilities; increased frequency of the green bin service in recent times and also with the impending improvements that are to be made to the system in the coming months - eg abolition of  bin tags by the introduction of an Advance Credit System to facilitate pay on line, by phone, text top up etc, the introduction of the brown bin service etc.
