QUESTION: Councillor D. Keating

To ask the Manager to report in detail on South Dublin County Council's policy on the introduction of restrictions for Heavy Goods Vehicles on certain roads and in certain areas in the county.

REPLY:

Heavy vehicles may be restricted travelling along certain roads, other than for access reasons, under road traffic regulations. The restrictions apply to the unladen vehicle weight.

The installation of such restrictions on existing roads in South Dublin is through the traffic management representation system. Requests for heavy vehicle restrictions are dealt with on a case by case basis. In arriving at a recommendation the following are considered:

• The quantity of heavy traffic as a portion of the general traffic.
• The amount of heavy traffic permitted to use the road for access and not affected by the restriction.
• The point at which the restriction would be most effective.
• Availability and suitability of alternative routes.
• The overall benefit and consequences of the heavy vehicle restriction.
