SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

MOTION NO. 4
MOTION: Councillor S. Laing
That the Manager consider an increase in grass cutting of grass verges as many of these are left unattended to as many of the old people are unable to provide this service.
REPORT:
The Council’s Parks Department undertakes the maintenance of parks, open spaces together with roadside margins along with major arterial routes within the County. This includes grass cutting, weed control, litter collection and the planting and care of trees. They also plant and maintain trees within housing estates.
However, Parks Department does not maintain the grass margins/verges within estates and the tradition has been that these works are undertaken by the householders and/or the community/residents association particularly in relation to the elderly and incapacitated.
The Council also provide extensive support to community/residents associations through Community grants for the purchase of lawnmowers/planting shrubs and flowers.
Environmental Services Department supports and encourages local groups through its “Beautiful South Dublin County” (formerly Tidy Districts) Programme. Assistance is provided by supplying litter pickers; refuse sacks and graffiti removal material.
