QUESTION NO. 9
QUESTION: Councillor J. Hannon
To ask the Manager to report on the view of cyclists that our cycle paths are unsuitable in that the lips are too high, and that cyclists using them must give way to other traffic, and can he also report generally on the making and implementation of policy on the encouragement of safe cycling as a mode of transport in the area of this Committee.
REPLY:
A review of cycling policy is at present being carried out however it should be noted that cycling policy has to date been primarily informed by the DTO. The DTO have historically not been in favour of on-road cycle tracks as they are considered unsafe for vulnerable road users especially children. In relation to off-road cycle tracks it has been considered the safer option to require cyclists to yield to vehicular traffic. Policy matters generally fall to be considered by Strategic Policy Committees in the first instance.
