Joint Policing Committee – Oireachtas Nominations
Guidelines on the establishment of Joint Policing Committees under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 specifies the following composition for South Dublin County:
• 14 Local Authority Members (plus Mayor ex-officio)
• 5 Members of the Oireachtas
• 2 Garda Nominations
• 3 Community Representatives
• County Manager + 1 Nominated Official
The local authority representatives on the Committee were ratified at the July County Council meeting.
In accordance with the procedure laid down in the guidelines, contact was made with Oireachtas members for the area and expressions of interest in membership of the Committee were received from nine TDs and Senators. The four political parties agreed to nominate one member each as follows:
Fianna Fail - Charlie O’Connor TD
Fine Gael – Alan Shatter TD
Labour – Pat Rabbitte TD
Green Party – Paul Gogarty
and agreed in accordance with the guidelines that the remaining member be drawn by lot from the remaining nominees i.e.:
Brian Hayes TD, FG
John Curran TD, FF
Joanna Tuffy TD, Labour
Senator Alex White, Labour
Senator Frances Fitzgerald, FG.
At the Organisation and Procedure and Finance Committee meeting held on 20/9/07, the five names were put into a hat and Mayor Billy Gogarty drew the name of Deputy Joanna Tuffy, Labour, to fill the fifth Oireachtas Member vacancy on the Joint Policing Committee.
The inaugural meeting of this committee has been scheduled for 26th October 2007.
