QUESTION NO. 4

QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart

To ask the Manager to define flood plains in the context of our County and to categorise the flood plain areas of the county and outline which flood plains, if any, have been - built on; have been zoned but have not been built on; are in the process of being built on?

REPLY:

A flood plain is defined as a low lying area near a river or stream that is subject to periodic flooding. The Office of Public Works (OPW) developed a web site www.floodmaps.ie and www.flooding.ie which show areas which are at risk of flooding and other relevant information relating to flooding. Parts of Lucan and Clondalkin have been subjected to periodic flooding. The Council carried out major flood alleviation works on the Griffeen and Camac Rivers and these have mitigated the risk of flooding in these areas.

Low lying areas within the River Dodder catchment are also subject to recurring flooding and a major study is underway to identify flood risk areas and to recommend flood alleviation measures.

Part of Robinhood Industrial Estate and Whitehall Road area are also prone to flooding. The Council has just completed a topographic survey of these areas and it is planned to implement flood alleviation works in the near future
