QUESTION: Councillor D. Keating
To ask the Manager to report on what improvements are envisaged in 2007 to enhance the domestic refuse collection services in South Dublin?
REPLY
The Council provides an integrated Waste Management Service to over 84,000 households in
Waste Management Services include household waste collection, collection of dry and recyclable waste on a four-weekly cycle, supply of home composters, programmed junk collection and the provision of a network of Bring Banks for glass, cans, etc.
During 2007, the Regional Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) will be developed and when commissioned, this facility will allow for the introduction of plastic bottles into the dry recyclables waste stream for collection. The four Dublin Councils (who manage this Recycling Contract on a regional basis) are currently considering issues of frequency and related cost, which will result from the expansion to include plastic bottles.
During 2007, the tender process in respect of the Biowaste Facility at Ballyogan will be progressed by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
The strategy to expand and improve the Council’s Bring Bank network will continue in 2007. In December 2006, Bring Banks were installed at two new locations: (a)
The appointment of a new Assistant Environmental Awareness Officer will support the Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer in expanding the programme of awareness building in Waste management and Environmental matters.
